Dignitas International Co-Founder & Executive Director Named Recipient of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 TM

Toronto, May 6, 2008 - Dignitas International is pleased to announce that James Fraser, Co-Founder and Executive Director, has been named a Recipient of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40TM for 2007. In 2004, Fraser and Dr. James Orbinski founded Dignitas to increase access to HIV/AIDS-related prevention, treatment, care and support, focusing their efforts on medical intervention, health systems development, and operations research. This recognition follows the April release of An Imperfect Offering by Dr. Orbinski and the Canadian premiere of Triage: Dr. James Orbinski’s Humanitarian Dilemma at Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival.

Canada's Top 40 Under 40TM is a prestigious national award program, which annually honours 40 Canadians in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors under the age of 40. The program, now in its 13th year, is managed by founding sponsor The Caldwell Partners. Other sponsors include Deloitte, The Globe and Mail, Certified General Accountants of Canada, and Air Canada.

Fraser and his peers were selected from over 1,500 nominees by an independent Advisory Board, comprised of 27 business leaders from across Canada. Honourees were chosen on five key criteria, including: vision and leadership; innovation and achievement; impact; community involvement and contribution; and strategy for growth.

Fraser has committed his professional career to humanitarian and international development work. From 1996-2002, he worked in logistics, program development and management, and monitoring and evaluation with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF/Doctors Without Borders) in some of the most demanding areas of the world, including Dagestan, Chechnya, Democratic Republic of Congo, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Colombia, Sierra Leone, Kosovo, and Chiapas, Mexico.

His achievements continue to grow with the groundbreaking work being done by Dignitas. In Africa, this young organization is having a profound impact on the lives of thousands of individuals and numerous communities dealing with HIV/AIDS and related illness.

In addition to his work with MSF, Fraser has conducted independent research in El Salvador, Armenia and Azerbaijan, has taught in the International Development Program at Humber College (Toronto) and has lectured at the University of Toronto and Ryerson University. He is currently Associate Researcher at the Centre for International Health at the University of Toronto.

Fraser received his Masters degree in Political Science and his Bachelor of Arts degree in Peace and Conflict Studies and International Relations from the University of Toronto. He has been awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship from Rotary International.

The 2007 Recipients of Canada's Top 40 Under 40TM are featured in The Globe and Mail on May 6th. Honourees will attend a series of celebratory events at the beginning of May in Toronto.
